Kambo vs Bufo: What's the Difference Between These Two Medicines?

Two of the most powerful — and most misunderstood — Amazonian medicines we work with. One is a deep body cleanse. The other dissolves the self. Here is how to tell them apart.

People often ask us if Kambo and Bufo are the same medicine. They are not. They come from different frogs, work in different ways, and ask different things of you. If you are trying to figure out which one is calling you — or whether either of them is right for you at this season of your life — this guide is for you.

Short answer: Kambo is a physical purification ceremony. Bufo is a non-dual consciousness ceremony. Different worlds.

Where They Come From

Kambo is the secretion from the Phyllomedusa bicolor — the giant monkey frog of the Amazon basin. Indigenous tribes in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia have used Kambo for thousands of years as a way to clear panema (heavy or stuck energy) and reset the body's systems before hunting, ceremony, or healing work.

Bufo is the secretion of the Bufo alvarius toad (also called the Sonoran Desert toad). The secretion contains 5-MeO-DMT — a compound sometimes called the God Molecule for the intensity of ego transcendence it can occasion. While the toad itself is native to the southwestern US and northern Mexico, the ceremonial use of Bufo as we hold it today draws on a synthesis of Sonoran, Mexican, and contemporary ceremonial traditions.

How They Feel In the Body

Kambo is intense, physical, and brief.

Small superficial burns are made on the skin — usually on the upper arm or leg — and a small amount of Kambo secretion is placed on the gates. Within minutes, you feel:

• A wave of heat moving through the chest and face

• Rapid heartbeat, sometimes lightheadedness

• Strong nausea, then purging — vomiting, sometimes diarrhea

• A sense of pressure or pulsing in the head

• Followed by a deep, clean, settled stillness

The active intensity lasts 15 to 45 minutes. The benefits — clarity, lightness, physical reset — can last for days or weeks.

Bufo is short in duration but vast in depth.

Bufo is vaporized and inhaled. Within 10 to 20 seconds, the medicine takes effect. For the next 15 to 30 minutes:

• The sense of being a separate self dissolves

• Time stretches, contracts, or disappears entirely

• You may experience pure light, unity consciousness, or what feels like meeting Source

• Strong somatic sensations — vibration, energy moving, sometimes spontaneous sound or movement

• Then a gradual return to the body, often with deep peace

Bufo is not a visionary medicine in the way ayahuasca or psilocybin are. There are no stories, no narratives. There is — sometimes — only being.

What They Heal (Traditional Use)

These are framings of traditional use and what participants report, not medical claims.

Kambo has traditionally been used to support:

• Addictions and compulsive patterns

• Depression and chronic low mood

• Chronic pain and inflammation

• Migraines

• Blood circulation and vascular insufficiency

• Infections and parasites

• Fertility issues

• Energetic stagnation (panema)

Bufo has traditionally been used to support:

• Existential fear — of death, of meaninglessness, of separation

• Trauma that talk therapy cannot reach

• Addiction at the level of the self that is doing the using

• Spiritual disconnection or a felt sense of being cut off from Source

• Repeating patterns where the deeper work feels stuck

Which One Is Calling You?

Kambo is for you if:

• You feel heavy, foggy, or physically stagnant

• You are working through addictions, depression, or chronic pain

• You want to reset your body and your nervous system

• You are not seeking a psychedelic or visionary experience

• You want intense work that is over quickly

Bufo is for you if:

• You are an experienced ceremony participant

• You feel called to non-dual or unity experience

• You are ready to release identification with the small self

• You have already done substantial integration work and know how to land back in your body afterward

• You are not in active crisis (Bufo is not crisis intervention)

And sometimes the answer is: not yet. That is a complete and honorable answer.

Held the Same Way
